tried and tested — a fashion editor’s capsule wardrobe

tried and tested — a fashion editor’s capsule wardrobe

ever since I’ve been working in the fashion industry I’ve become engrossed with the makings of an editor’s wardrobe. contrary to popular belief, we tend to be the most discerning when it comes to new acquirements. I’ve long fawned over the likes of emmanuelle alt and carine roitfeld’s collections referencing it as a marker of an assured sense of style, as it speaks to both women's french heritage and adoration of refinement. although I witness a multitude of fashion trends, I’ve also come to rely on a simple capsule of five or so key items I can rotate at any given time. they’re hard-working, transitional pieces I couldn’t be without and best of all, they echo my sense of style.

baserange, shaw kaftan off organic cotton

I’m a dress girl and jumper dresses make up the bulk of my winter wardrobe.  for refined and high-quality knitwear,  make a beeline for baserange’s sleek pieces. they're often languid silhouettes with convertible elements if you wish to enhance the shaping. I adore the inclusive and gender-neutral elements of their pieces.

 net-a-porter, manolo blahnik mules

heeled mules are proving popular this season, however, it’s fair to say that manolo blahnik spearheaded this design many years ago, proving its timelessness. Whether worn with a dressier ensemble or a t-shirt and jeans duo, it’s a simple way to elevate (and prop up) a look. this is something I’m always drawn to for my 5 ft 4 frame.

ninety percent, iphis top in bracken

this contemporary top design has infiltrated the fashion scene and filled the “nice top quota” for minimalists and maximalists alike. I’m finding myself drawn to the ripple design on tops and dresses. admittedly, it’s a trend-led piece this season, however the design elements are so subtle that it boasts a classic feel. 2024s scrunch and ripple effect is what shoulder pads were to the ‘80s.

matchesfashion uk, brown diagonal leather tote bag

as far as cost-per-wear is concerned, I’ve surely whittled mine down to the minuses with the sheer amount I’ve worn my dragon diffusion woven leather tote bag. as a lover of the basket bag design, I appreciate that woven leather iterations can be worn throughout the year, regardless of weather conditions (unlike jute and wicker basket bags). it’s something to consider if you live in an unpredictable climate.

cos, double-faced woll column maxi skirt

don’t sleep on the high street because you might just be surprised. I certainly was when I stumbled upon this refined column maxi comprising 100% wool (and double faced, no less). maxi skirts of this nature fit seamlessly into the official wardrobe territory and can make workwear feel contemporary, however you needn’t frequent the workplace to make the most of this design, as the styling opportunities are endless.

marie claire earrings

pearls have become part of my uniform, so much so that outfits feel incomplete without them. some people seal their ensembles with a perfumed spritz and although I am partial to that as an outfit finisher, to me, pearls always complete a look. from an overstated frock (which again, I’m partial to) to a crisp poplin shirt and vintage levi cut-offs, the power of a bold jewel should never be underestimated.
